NCC’s journey toward the goal of climate neutrality continues

NCC’s sustainability report, which has now been published, shows that NCC has reduced its climate emissions by 41 percent compared with the base year of 2015. The aim is to reduce the Group’s emissions by 60 percent by 2030 to reach climate neutrality by 2045. NCC is also strengthening it efforts to reduce emissions in the value chain and this year is reporting emissions from the most important categories.

“We are working actively to analyze and reduce our climate footprint in all parts of our operations. Access to data of an increasingly high quality means that we are more accurate and enables us to provide our customers with expertise so that we can jointly make the right decision and contribute to greater climate adaptation,” says Tomas Carlsson, President and CEO of NCC.

NCC will reduce emissions from its own operations1) by 60 percent by 2030 compared with 2015, measured as tons of carbon dioxide equivalents per SEK M of sales (emission intensity). Emission intensity in 2021 amounted to 3.5 CO2e tons/SEK M, corresponding to a reduction of 41 percent (42) compared with 2015.

Carbon emissions related to purchases of electricity, district heating and district cooling have declined compared with 2020. This was largely due to energy efficiency improvements, and an increased use of electricity from renewable sources, which amounted to 95 percent. However, carbon emissions related to fuel rose slightly due to an increase in the total amount of purchased fuels.

NCC is also working to reduce carbon emissions in the value chain2). NCC’s interim target is a 50-percent reduction in CO2e within the four areas where the climate impact is greatest: concrete, steel, asphalt and transportation, measured as kilograms of CO2e/purchased volume, by 2030.

NCC has focused on improving the availability of data in these categories in order to better analyze the climate emissions and to identify the processes and actions required to achieve the set targets. In an initial stage, emissions from ready-mix concrete, steel reinforcement and internally purchased asphalt are reported. See NCC’s web for the outcome of Scope 3.

Work is under way to analyze and measure emissions from transportation. NCC’s ambition is to include more products in these categories, as well as additional categories, in order to steadily cover an even larger share of the Group’s emissions in the value chain.

Updated sustainability framework
NCC has updated the Group’s sustainability framework on the basis of NCC’s strategic focus and purpose in order to better illuminate its sustainability priorities. The framework is divided into eight impact areas: Data and expertise, Natural resources and biodiversity, Materials and circularity, Climate and energy, Health and safety, People and team, Ethics and compliance and Economic performance. The Group’s values and Star behaviors also serve as cornerstones in this work. You can read more about NCC’s sustainability framework and the Group’s sustainability activities on NCC’s web.

1) Scope 1: Emissions related to fuel consumption in asphalt plants, and from own vehicles and machinery.
Scope 2: Emissions related to the production of electricity, district heating and district cooling used in the operations.

2) Scope 3: Indirect emissions from purchased material and external services, travel, subcontractors’ vehicles and machinery and transportation, as well as demolition of the Group’s products and waste. Base year 2015.
