NCC takes step toward completely digitalized projects

NCC is taking a large step in its digitalization work and is now laying the foundation for the introduction of a standardized digital language for all of the Group’s projects. By using standardized data, NCC will further advance its position in making the construction industry digital.

NCC has signed a framework agreement with the Norwegian company Cobuilder, whose offering includes providing solutions for the development of standardized product data templates (PDT). Through this cooperation, NCC will enable the introduction of a standardized digital language in all projects.

“The construction industry is behind in terms of digitalization and is still largely characterized by a silo mentality between disciplines, players and national borders. This makes digital cooperation more difficult across the board and we now want to do something about it,” says Johanna Fredhsdotter Lager, Head of Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) at NCC.

Library for digital languages

Data templates can be described simply as a library with a standardized digital language that provides information on, for example, the materials used in construction.

“NCC is on its way to becoming a data-informed company and by increasing the exchange of information and contributing to effective interaction with all partners in projects, the risk of errors declines and it enables us to work more efficiently with complex project requirements,” Johanna Fredhsdotter Lager continues.

“Most players in the industry – owners and contractors – will admit that it is difficult to obtain detailed information about the products used during a construction project. With standardized data templates, this is easily accessible,” says Lars Chr. Fredenlund, CEO of Cobuilder.

Swedish projects first to have data templates

For major construction projects, the standardized language will provide even greater opportunities, particularly in terms of how data can be used for collaboration and in the various processes in design, product selection, sustainability and management. The first projects to implement data templates are in NCC’s construction operations in Sweden.

“We are now working to introduce it in all countries where we conduct operations. It will simplify our processes to create, manage and share data between projects, players and countries,” says Johanna Fredhsdotter Lager.
