Our Research and Development

We conduct extensive R&D work across the company. The focus is on everything from knowledge-building research to more industrially oriented product and method development, often in close collaboration with customers, suppliers and universities.

NCC has an ongoing partnership with various universities and employs 6–8 industrial PhD students, who contribute constructively to our own strategic development. We also have six visiting professors posted at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Chalmers University of Technology, Luleå University of Technology and the Faculty of Engineering, LTH, at Lund University.

Key Issues For the Future

Efficient construction at the right price and with as little impact on the climate as possible is a key issue for the future. We are therefore committed to improving construction methods and collaborative processes and reducing energy consumption. Through research projects, we want to develop the specialist expertise within NCC and pave the way for changes in the industry.

International Collaboration

Many of the research projects are conducted in collaboration with universities in Sweden and the rest of Europe. NCC is also part of several European research networks, such as ENCORD and ECTP.

Our research and development projects concentrate primarily on the following areas:

  • Sustainability – climate, environment, remediation, carbon emissions, contaminated land
  • Energy efficiency – energy-efficient buildings and construction, user behaviors, new energy sources, installation
  • Industrialized and virtual construction – industrialized production, modern IT tools (e.g. BIM), logistics, production technology, planning, management of the construction process, risk management, experience feedback
  • Civil engineering – infrastructure, operation and maintenance
  • Building technology – damp and mold, indoor climate, acoustics, construction materials
  • Retrofits/renovation/regeneration/conversion

Major R&D Projects

Streamer

An EU project on energy-efficient buildings in areas such as healthcare. The project is aiming for a 50% reduction in energy use and carbon emissions for new and retrofitted buildings in healthcare districts through holistic and system-based design. One of the goals is to improve semantics-driven design methods and tools for Geo and Building Information Modeling (GIS and BIM) in order to validate energy performance during the design phase.

Pantura

An EU project on low-disturbance sustainable urban construction, with an emphasis on bridges. It is, however, important to stress that the proposed methods can be applied to all infrastructure projects. The aims were to improve highly flexible off-site production processes, create resource-efficient construction sites, improve technologies and tools for bridge construction, repair and renovation in densely populated areas and enhance communication between stakeholders, local authorities and construction companies. The project ran for three years and concluded in late 2013/early 2014. Twelve partners from six countries took part, including NCC, the Swedish Transport Administration and Chalmers University of Technology from Sweden.

E2Rebuild

An EU project on industrialized energy-efficient retrofitting of residential buildings in cold climates. The focus of the project was on demonstrations. The demonstrations were accompanied by research and development in the areas of planning and retrofitting strategies, industrial production methods, measurement methods and resident interaction. The results of this were used to create an industrial platform for energy-efficient renovation. The project ran for 3.5 years and concluded in June 2014. Twenty partners from eight countries took part, including NCC, White, SP and Apartment Bostad Väst from Sweden. The project was coordinated by NCC.
