NCC switches to HoloLens era as construction industry leader

NCC is venturing bravely into the digital world. We have introduced Microsoft HoloLens smartglasses to enable even more realistic visual presentation of building plans.

“We want to be pioneers and our vision is to renew the industry – that’s what this is about,” says Tuomas Lankinen, Project Engineer at NCC who is working on the project.

HoloLens is a pair of augmented reality smartglasses. The device projects holograms to the real world around you. For example, the Fredriksberg office building under construction in the Vallila district in Helsinki can now be presented in life size on the site, although the construction work is only just starting. It is possible to view either a SketchUp or IFC model using HoloLens.

“HoloLens contains sensors that map the space and surfaces to keep the projected model in place. We have also tested the location of technical building services. Challenges still remain, for example, in terms of the perspective of the building,” says Tatu Penttinen, Production Engineer at NCC.

Microsoft HoloLens is not yet commercially available, but NCC is developing the glasses together with technology company Trimble.

“We definitely want to apply this technology in full scale already in the development stage, as it’s the best way to move on and forward the technology toward the user needs,” says Elina Tokola-Tuohino, Production Manager at NCC.
