Time Out for a stronger safety culture

Worksite accidents at NCC have more than halved in five years.  Numerous initiatives have contributed to the positive trend, including such preventive measures as Time Out. Today, the importance of safety will be discussed during Awareness Day at all NCC worksites.

“We have a vision of zero accidents in the workplace and we want everyone to arrive home from work safe and sound. Time Out is an approach that helps us to reduce the number of accidents at our worksites; to speak up, act, take the necessary measures and secure hazardous and unsafe work situations,” says Peter Wågström, President and CEO of NCC.

This is the sixth consecutive year that NCC is arranging Awareness Day and the theme for the second consecutive year is Time Out. Tools are downed at 9:00 a.m. at all NCC worksites in all markets. A Group-wide discussion is held at the worksite with everyone given the opportunity to put forward thoughts and ideas on how the worksite can be made even safer, at both a physical and psychosocial level, and what each individual can do.

“Although it is important that we set aside a special day – Awareness Day – to discuss safety, it is nonetheless a topic that we must focus on every day,” says Lars-Gunnar Larsson, Group Work Environment Manager at NCC.

NCC has been surveying trends in the number of worksite accidents since 2011. The number of worksite accidents has fallen by 51 percent in the past five years.

“It is gratifying that the number of worksite accidents has fallen by so much, but there is more to do. We are working to promote a stronger safety culture by highlighting the importance of and tolerance toward Time Out. Taking a Time Out should be a natural part of our work whenever we witness reckless behavior or a threat to safety. Time Out means being bold enough to take a stance and assuming personal responsibility for safety at the worksite and where ‘the courage to speak up’ and ‘watching out for one another’ form natural elements,” says Lars-Gunnar Larsson.

NCC has a vision of reducing worksite accidents to zero and has zero tolerance for non-compliance with safety rules.
