It is now possible to purchase asphalt mixtures with known environmental impact, linked to the specific asphalt plants where they are produced. This provides the basis for more accurate environmental and climate calculations.
In order to obtain sharper and more specific Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), we at NCC have had an EPD process in place since 2019. The process is third-party certified and through it we produce environmental product declarations, linked to the asphalt plant where the product is manufactured.
In these EPDs, we report the environmental impact of our products in a way that is not possible when using standard data alone. We do this to:
NCC's Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are specific in terms of both location and product, i.e. they are based on verified data from each asphalt plant's own production. The data in such a declaration is much more reliable and accurate than the data in a calculation based on a flat rate.
The thorough process we use to produce a site- and product-specific EPD is certified and audited through annual third-party audits. Every EPD you receive from us is based on data from us and our suppliers to create traceability throughout the entire production chain of our asphalt products.
By mapping the environmental impact with the help of EPDs, we can, together with both you as a customer and our suppliers, develop our common processes to reduce the total environmental impact throughout the chain up to the finished coating. For our customers, this means:
Yes! A major advantage of EPDs is that they are publicly reported and our EPDs are published at: EPD Library | EPD International (environdec.com)
Actively working with life cycle analyses and EPDs to develop our own processes is a natural part of NCC's efforts to reduce both our own and our customers' environmental impact. Since the life cycle analysis is based on the specific asphalt plant's operations, we can analyse exactly which processes and stages in production have the greatest environmental impact and make targeted efforts.
The work also clarifies the differences between our asphalt plants, which makes it possible to disseminate valuable lessons and good examples within the company. Through process improvements in both the short and long term, we can continue to offer high-quality asphalt produced with lower carbon dioxide emissions compared to traditional manufacturing.
